Hidden treasures in Ireland

Published on 1 June 2024 at 21:20

Ireland is a land of enchantment, with its lush green landscapes, ancient castles, and rugged coastlines. While popular tourist spots like the Giant’s Causeway and the Cliffs of Moher are well-known, there are hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. Let’s explore some lesser-known gems that you should consider visiting:

1. The Loop Head Peninsula

Located in County Clare, the Loop Head Peninsula offers magnificent cliffs near the Loop Head Lighthouse. These cliffs are often overlooked by tourists, which makes them even more special. You’ll rarely encounter large crowds here. Head to the lighthouse car park and follow the muddy trail towards the cliffs. Listen to the crashing waves as you explore-you will find breathtaking views of the sea stack to your left and kilkee to your right.

2. McDermott’s Castle on Lough Key

In Roscommon, on the beautiful Lough Key, lies the unique McDermott’s Castle. Lough Key stretches across 10 kilometers and boasts over 30 islands. Castle Island is one of these islands, where you’ll find the ruins of McDermott’s Castle. Explore the island and learn about the tragic tale behind this historic site!

3. Coumshingaun Lough in Waterford

For stunning views and a serious workout, head to the Coumshingaun Lake Walk in Waterford. Be warned—it’s one of the more challenging hikes in Ireland, requiring good navigational skills. The full trail takes 4 to 6 hours to complete, but the glorious views of the inky lake below are worth it. Prepare for some scrambling as you explore this hidden gem!

4. Scrabo Tower in Newtownards, County Down

Scrabo Tower, built in the 19th century, is a fascinating ‘Folly’ structure. A ‘Folly’ is a decorative building with an intriguing design. Climb the hill in Scrabo Country Park to enjoy incredible views over Strangford Lough and the surrounding countryside. The tower's purpose remains a mystery, adding to its allure.

Hidden gems like these are inviting you to dive into a trip to Ireland. More destinations and planned itenerary is available in the Itinerarys tab on our website. There you can find a route to explore extraordinary locations all over Ireland in a planned and tested way.
